Guest Voice: Chuck Baldwin asks What’s More Important: Liberty Or The Entity That Protects It?

This is a reprint of an article by Chuck Baldwin:

Let me ask readers a question. What’s more important: freedom and its undergirding principles, or the entity meant to protect it? A word of caution: be careful how you answer that question, because the way you answer marks your understanding (or lack thereof) of both freedom and the purpose of government.

Thomas Jefferson–and the rest of America’s founders–believed that freedom was the principal possession, because liberty is a divine–not human–gift. Listen to Jefferson:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men.” (Declaration of Independence)

Jefferson could not be clearer: America’s founders desired a land in which men might live in liberty. By declaring independence from the government of Great Britain (and instituting new government), Jefferson, et al., did not intend to erect an idol (government) that men would worship. They created a mechanism designed to protect that which they considered to be their most precious possession: liberty. In other words, the government they created by the Constitution of 1787 was not the object; freedom’s protection was the object.

Again, listen to Jefferson: “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men.” In other words, government is not the end; it is the means. Government is not the goal; it is the vehicle used to reach the goal. Nowhere did Jefferson (and the rest of America’s founders) express the sentiment that government, itself, was the objective. Listen to Jefferson once more:

“That whenever ANY FORM OF GOVERNMENT becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” (Declaration) (Emphasis added.)

Jefferson is clear: people have a right to alter or abolish ANY FORM OF GOVERNMENT that becomes destructive to liberty. To America’s founders, there was no such thing as a sacred cow when it came to government. Government had but one purpose: “to secure these rights.” When ANY FORM of government stops protecting sacred, God-given liberties, it is the right and duty of people to do whatever they deem appropriate to secure their liberties–even to abolishing the government.

To America’s founders, patriotism had everything to do with the love of liberty, not the love of government!

Today’s brand of patriotism (at least as expressed by many) is totally foreign to the fundamental principles of liberty upon which America was built. I’m talking about the idea that government is an end and aim in itself; the idea that government must be protected from the people; the idea that bigger government equals better government; the idea that criticism of the government makes one unpatriotic; the idea that government is a panacea for all our ills; and the idea that loyalty to the nation equals loyalty to the government. All of this is a bunch of bull manure!

When government–ANY GOVERNMENT–stops protecting the liberties of its citizens, and especially when it begins trampling those liberties, it has become a “destructive” power, and needs to be altered or abolished. Period.

Can any honest, objective citizen not readily recognize that the current central government in Washington, D.C., long ago stopped protecting the God-given rights of free men, and has become a usurper of those rights? Is there the slightest doubt in the heart of any lover of liberty that the biggest threat to our liberties is not to be found in any foreign capital, but in that putrid province by the Potomac?

Therefore, we must cast off this phony idea that we owe some kind of devotion to the “system.” Away with the notion that vowing to protect and prolong the “powers that be” makes us “good” Americans. The truth is, there is very little in Washington, D.C., that is worthy of protecting or prolonging. The “system” is a ravenous BEAST that is gorging itself on our liberties!

Patriotism has nothing to do with supporting a President, or being loyal to a political party, or anything of the sort.

Is it patriotic to support our country (which almost always means our government), “right or wrong”? This is one of the most misquoted clichés in American history, by the way. Big Government zealots (on both the right and the left) use this phrase often to try to stifle opposition by making people who would fight for smaller government appear “unpatriotic.”

The cliché, “My country, right or wrong,” comes from a short address delivered on the floor of the US Senate by Missouri Senator Carl Schurz. Taking a strong anti-imperialist position and having his patriotism questioned because of it (what’s new, right?), Schurz, on February 29, 1872, said, “The senator from Wisconsin cannot frighten me by exclaiming, ‘My country, right or wrong.’ In one sense I say so, too. My country–and my country is the great American Republic. My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.” (Source: The Congressional Globe, vol. 45, p. 1287)

Schurz then later expanded on this short statement in a speech delivered at the Anti-Imperialistic Conference in Chicago, Illinois, on October 17, 1899. He said, “I confidently trust that the American people will prove themselves . . . too wise not to detect the false pride or the dangerous ambitions or the selfish schemes which so often hide themselves under that deceptive cry of mock patriotism: ‘Our country, right or wrong!’ They will not fail to recognize that our dignity, our free institutions and the peace and welfare of this and coming generations of Americans will be secure only as we cling to the watchword of TRUE patriotism: ‘Our country–when right to be kept right; when wrong to be put right.’” (Source: Speeches, Correspondence and Political Papers of Carl Schurz, vol. 6, 1913, p. 119) (Emphasis in original.)

Amen! In a free society, genuine patriotism demands that our country be RIGHT, as our nation’s policies and practices reflect the values and principles of its citizens. To feign some kind of robotic devotion to a nation without regard to sacred principle or constitutional fidelity is to become a mindless creature: at best, to be manipulated by any and every Machiavellian that comes along, or, at worst, to be a willing participant in tyranny.

As to loyalty to a President merely because he is President, Theodore Roosevelt may have said it best:

“Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the President or any other public official save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth–whether about the President or anyone else.”

Hence, freedom-loving Americans cannot afford to become infatuated with Washington, D.C. We cannot allow these propagandists on network television to distort the meaning of true patriotism in our hearts.

Patriotism means we love freedom. It means we understand that freedom is a gift of God. It means we understand that government has only one legitimate function: to protect freedom. It means that our love of liberty demands that we oppose, alter, or even abolish ANY FORM of government that becomes destructive to these ends. And it means that we will never allow government to steal liberty from our hearts.

As I asked at the beginning of this column, What’s more important: freedom and its undergirding principles, or the entity meant to protect it? The right answer is, freedom and its undergirding principles. If you understand that, then you rightly understand that the current government we find ourselves under is in desperate need of replacement. And whatever, however, and whenever that replacement reveals itself is not nearly as important as that liberty is preserved.

On the other hand, if you mistakenly believe that government (the entity meant to protect liberty) is more important than liberty, you are both tragically deceived and pathetically impotent to preserving freedom. You may also have identified yourself as an enemy of freedom.

As for me and my house, we will stand with Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence–in whatever form it may present itself in a modern world bent on dismantling our liberties. In other words, I pledge no loyalty to any government that seeks to destroy our freedom–including the current one!

The Story:

I barely knew Christine when she turned up at my door at around eight o’clock on the night of Halloween. We’d met for the first and only time three months earlier when my two roommates and I signed the lease on our apartment: Christine’s aunt owned the place we were moving into, and she happened to be up from Delaware visiting at the time. But we’d only spent about five minutes together that day and we hadn’t spoken much, and I hadn’t thought of her since.

Yet here she was standing outside my door with a friend. And both of them were pretty tipsy.

I Had a One-Night Stand With Christine O’Donnell.  She asked if she and her friend could come inside our apartment to change into their costumes. She couldn’t change at her aunt’s place, she said, because she was sleeping and she didn’t want to wake her up. Would we mind if she used our bathroom instead?

It was a pretty strange request. Sure, weird stuff happens on Halloween, but I barely knew her, and it isn’t every day that someone shows up at your front door and asks to change into their ladybug costume. But I told her it was fine and she was welcome to use our place to get ready.

It didn’t take long before the two women—who’d clearly been drinking—were sitting on my couch, beers in hand, trying to convince my roommate and me to join them for a night on the town. Christine was in the holiday spirit dressed in her ladybug outfit. Her friend, who had a female pirate costume on, was much more quiet and reserved. She barely spoke all night.

Here we go again: Canada’s Human Rights Commission is going after another Blogger

About 18 months ago everybody’s favourite Ex-Canadian Human Rights Commission employee Richard Warman launched one of his many, as in very many, SLAPP suits against yours truly for, among other dastardly deeds, linking to the “far-right web site http://www.steynonline.com/“. Sheesh everybody knows Mark Steyn is controversial.

It gets better. I’m also being sued for linking to a web site while specifically referring to “the allegations” against Richard Warman. But what else would you expect from Warman, a man so tone deaf he actually believed he could win the support of both the CJC and B’nai Brith in a hate crime complaint against the JDL, who dared offend him by showing the Geert Wilders film “Fitna”.


Warman is also suing for comments made by multiple readers. In one instance for the heinous crime of calling him a “Bully”. We all know what this SLAPP suit is really all about. Warman is using every lawfare tactic he can to prevent a discussion in the public interest of Section 13 (1) and the CHRC. A discussion in which he must feature prominently.

Warman is suing me for $500,000.00 Dollars. A ridiculous amount for an equally ridiculous lawsuit. Nonetheless even nuisance suits such as this must be defended against. To date legal fees have run me about 10K. I’ve covered that from my own pocket. I am now asking for your help. I know times are hard for many of us but if every reader who visited daily were to contribute 5 or 10 dollars then that would go a long way to helping all of us out.

This is your fight too, well except for the lawyer stuff anyway;)

Karl Rove on Sarah Palin

He added that the promotional clip for Sarah Palin’s Alaska could be especially detrimental to any political campaign. It features the mother of five in the great outdoors saying: “I would rather be doing this than in some stuffy old political office.”

Mr Rove, who remains a major force on the US political scene, also implied that Mrs Palin lacked the stomach for the rigours of a presidential primary campaign, which will begin early next year before the first polls in 2012.

Mr Rove was asked if the 46-year-old Mrs Palin, who is among the front-runners for the next Republican nomination, would be a wise choice if the party wanted to seize the White House from President Barack Obama. He replied: “You can make a plausible case for any of them on paper, but it is not going to be paper in 2011. It’s going to be blood, it’s going to be sweat and tears and it’s going to be hard effort.

From the record, let’s review Mr. Rove’s historic qualifiers for “gravitas”:

  • defy the Constitution and act on the basis of your gut
  • as a “good Christian,” embrace Lenin’s view of “permanent revolution,” as long as it’s democratic and imposed by American armed force and permanent occupation
  • shoot your best friend in the face, almost blinding him, and never apologize (OK, it was Cheney, but in Texas, and Bush picked him)
  • betray the key promises you made in your campaign
  • thrive on constantly instilling fear in the populace
  • destroy liberty, privacy rights, the economy, the dollar, the GOP (“them that brung ya,” in the words of another famous Texan), the conservative and pro-life movements (without whom you’d have lost miserably), while you foment international contempt for the United States and its people
  • always insist that your unconstitutional wars are “America’s”
  • hide proof (now revealed) that as Commander-in-Chief you approved orders that US troops should not interfere when the puppet government installed by US occupiers tortured prisoners handed over to them by US forces

  • never apologize, and schedule a book tour trumpeting your “successes”

Question for Mr. Rove: Karl, Mrs. Palin aside (apparently, for all her faults, you can’t control her), who could be a worthy successor to this legacy of the marvelous W? Please advise, and thanks.

Those who live in glass houses, should not throw stones. On the other hand, I am not a Palin fan, at all. But, I do not think that Karl Rove — of all people — ought to be commenting on anyone at all.

Now that progress has been made, he said, “we can’t have special interests sitting shotgun. We gotta have middle class families up in front. We don’t mind the Republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back.

For the record, Obama is, at least partially correct —- Republicans, when in power and in the majority during the Bush era; did get addicted to pork and spending — just like they did back in the 1990’s. However, it is fair to note that the Democrats did do the social engineering of the economy and the housing market. This caused the bubble and the eventual collapse of the housing market and the flash crash of 2008; which lead to the credit crisis and the bailouts and so forth.

Anyhow, this blockhead over Redstate, a Dave Poff writes this idiotic tripe:

In the new post-racial America, brought to us by Barack “don’t call me black or white, just call me American” Obama, we have been told our differences are behind us now…just because he exists and… just because he is black. Yet, day by day and speech by speech, this President has done more damage to race relations than any combination of Presidents since Lyndon Johnson…and he, at least, tried to make things better with a sincere heart.

Were anyone else to have been caught on tape making these sorts of remarks, they’d have already been fired and given a 2 million dollar job contract with the competition. Oh wait.

The lack of outrage should surprise no one here. We were told to vote for him… not because he was black but… because he brought with him hope and change and the promise of a color blind society. He has delivered on none of these, instead making race relations worse today than they were before he was elected. Since being sworn in we’ve been routinely told that any disagreements with his agenda HAD to be because he was… wait for it…

Black.

Some of us fall for that drivel, but most of us…and especially the folks pulling levers in voting booths all across America in a few days…know better. A great DEAL better.

Bridging the racial divide in this country will not come from highlighting our differences and throwing these in our faces so we can turn them against each other. And it will most certainly not come from throwing slurs at individual groups or races, or using *dated* ones to make jokes at the expense of others.

It will come from mutual respect and understanding, each of the other. This President has neither, and he is not qualified to lead any of us in the struggle to get there.

Yeah Dave, as your little acronym says, “Are you fucking kidding me?” Are you? Really? I mean, making comments like this; is not doing a damn bit of good for our side man. I dislike the President’s policies as much as the next person —- but basically backhandedly calling the President of the United States the N-Word — is just fucking wrong dude. Something I have not forgotten about, and still might seek legal action against the owner of and the people that pony up the cash to keep that site afloat; which happens to be Townhall.com.

If we lose this damned election, we will have nothing or no one to blame, but our own damned selves. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB Fox 41) — Outside the Conway-Paul debate, a Rand Paul supporter pulled the woman’s blonde wig off and stomped on her head. She was representing the liberal organization MoveOn.org and claimed to be presenting Paul with an award from RepubliCorp. That’s a group created by MoveOn.org that focuses on what it calls the merger between corporate America and the Republican Party. “I’m here to present Rand Paul with the ‘Employee of the Month’ award, however his supporters were not very nice to me and my message which is same as everyone else. I got my head stepped on and I have a bit of a headache,” said Lauren Valle, MoveOn.org. The woman denied police were involved, but right afterwards officers pulled her aside to question her about the incident.

I am in agreement with John Hawkings on this one; I do not care who she is, or what she was doing —- stomping people’s noggins on the curb is not cool at all. I mean, I dislike liberals and progressives as much as the next Right Wing knucklehead; but this is totally unacceptable. These people have as much right to believe and the right to express the way they believe; no matter how ignorant and misinformed it might be. The is American, and curb stomping someone’s head, because you do not like what they are saying and might be doing — is on par with Nazi Germany! Just as unacceptable when Kenneth Gladney was roughed up by the SEIU guys. Both are wrong and both should be treated as a criminal event.

Let me go on the record as saying that this here, that this could be considered of political terrorism and should be treated as such and no I am not kidding.

This “Heckler”, who actually made it on to the stage, can only be described as Superhero-like, with snow white hair, lean physique, and a very tan complexion. The Heckler has been identified as none other than the candidate ”of the people”, the “ I need your vote, what should I say now” candidate, the “ what do the pollsters think I should do” candidate. The “Heckler” of whom I refer to was none other than Governor Charlie “The Chuckster” Crist.

Rubio was responding to Governor Crist’s politically expedient ‘flip-flops’ on the issues, when Governor Crist lost it and began a rant that was aimed to talk over Rubio, simply to try to muzzle Rubio from laying a smackdown on him by detailing the reasons for the Governor’s change in party affiliation and the notorious, well documented changes in his positions on the issues.

Rubio delivered the line of the campaign when he said that he had been heckled before from the audience, but never by one of his opponents on stage. Rubio called Crist a “heckler” several times during the exchange.

My feelings on the Iraq War Wikileaks dump

I have one thing to say about the dump by Wikileaks of documents related to the War in Iraq.

War —— is pure hell.

I did not agree with the decision to go into Iraq and I always knew —- always — that this stuff would eventually come out.

It does hurt our guys over there now; which is the goal of the rat bastard that is running the site. I loathe him with every fiber of my being.

However, I believe that this should a be lesson to those who are in places of influential power—- that they should think long and hard, the next time they try to persuade a President to go to war with a Country to further your own political agenda or foreign policy vision that you support.  Going to war to support a Country with zero standing with the United Nations and who was illegally recognized by a sitting President —- always has disastrous results. You would have thought that these idiots would have learned that lesson during the Vietnam era — but, as they say, old dogs never learn new tricks. 🙄

It is a sad thing, but it was bound to happen — sooner or later.

Juan Williams talks more about his firing from NPR

I know, I know…. At this point, even I am sick of writing about it. The man got fired, and got a nice deal from Fox. But he is not letting this one go; at least not right away. I cannot say that I blame him either. I mean, Liberals are supposed to be the tolerant ones and something like this happens —- it just kills that Meme totally.

Now before anyone says, “Oh, that is just his opinion!” Think again, looks like Mr. Williams is not only one feeling the way he does:

As an Arab-American of Muslim descent, I am not offended by this because in all honesty I have had the same reaction in similar circumstances. In Berlin a couple of years ago, my flight was delayed because, we were told, one of the passengers, who was in a wheelchair, needed extra assistance. When she finally was brought into the waiting area, she was covered from head to toe in traditional Muslim dress and only her eyes were visible. What happened? I grew nervous. I got on the plane just the same, but with trepidation.

Was my response rational? Yes and no.

It was not Muslims in traditional garb who hijacked those planes on 9/11, and it certainly was not Muslim women in veils and wheelchairs. If anything, an Islamist terrorist wants to blend in, not stand out.

However, it was not a traditional sort of terrorist attack I feared in this case, but perhaps something unexpected: a traditional Muslim woman in a veil, confined to a wheelchair, who was loaded with explosives.

That may make me guilty of an overactive imagination, but perhaps not. Not that many years later, a young Muslim on an international flight into Detroit tried to light explosives in his underwear.

I mention all this for one main reason. I grew up surrounded by Islamic culture, went to Islamic events, and was used to seeing women in traditional Muslim clothing, and yet when that woman appeared at the Berlin airport, I was scared.

That’s all Mr. Williams was saying. He didn’t say that they should be removed from the plane, treated differently, or anything close to that. He simply said he got nervous. And for that, he was fired.

The reality is that when Muslims cease to be the main perpetrators of terrorism in the world, such fears about traditional garb are bound to vanish. Until such time, the anxiety will remain. In the long run, it’s what we do with such fears that matters, not that we have them.

But regarding what happened to Mr. Williams, no one should tolerate such intolerant behavior on the part of NPR. This broadcast network is paid for by the American taxpayers, and as such we all have a stake in its decisions.

Anyone who cares about freedom of speech should protest what has been done to this decent and fair man. And even if that were not the case, even if Mr. Williams’ views made him a detestable ogre to most, he still has the right to voice them. For many Americans, NPR’s consistent tilt to the left has caused them to reject it as a viable source of news.

NPR often embodies the very things it claims to stand against: unfairness, narrow-mindedness and reactionary policies.

I ask all Americans of conscience, most particularly those of Arab and/or Muslim descent, to protest the firing of Juan Williams and to demand that public funding to NPR cease until Mr. Williams’s good name has been cleared and he has been rehired (if he still wants to work for this network).

We deserve better from a public radio network funded by taxpayer money.

I have no idea what that man’s politics is, or what party he votes for — but even I cannot argue with that.

Also, please note; I did not always agree with the decisions that George W. Bush made while he was in office. However, considering what we have now for a President — I have to respect this man. He was, for all of his faults, a leader. Again, I did not agree with everything he did — especially his decision to go to war in Iraq — I also disagree with his idea of exporting democracy to other countries; which is a hallmark of Wilsonian foreign policy. However, I will give the man the respect and honor he does the deserve. That is what separates me from the left — they steadfastly refuse to respect the man and the office. I respect the man and the office; I just do not agree on the policies. I can separate the two, liberals cannot.

If Rachel Maddow does not retract this statement, she should be FIRED!

“Lean Forward,” MSNBC’s new slogan suggests. The better to stick a shiv in your opponent’s back.
Ethics-averse Rachel Maddow did exactly that on her MSNBC show last night. After disparaging Republican candidates for their gall in criticizing reckless federal spending and government-controlled health care, Maddow made this jaw-dropper of a claim —

MADDOW: Yes, this has happened to a smaller degree before. In 1994, in the first mid-term election after the last Democratic president was elected, we got a slate of candidates that included Helen Chenoweth of Idaho and Steve Stockman of Texas. These two were so close to the militia movement in this country that Mr. Stockman actually received advance notice that the Oklahoma City bombing was going to happen.

… and by that, Maddow implies, Stockman consigned 168 innocent people to death. Except that Stockman received no such prior, uh, “notice” (note how Maddow did not say “warning”) , which explains why Maddow neglected to attribute this outlandish assertion to a source, any source.

Problem is, she’d have trouble doing so beyond left-wing fever swamps comparable to MSNBC. A perfunctory search through Google quickly reveals evidence refuting Maddow’s claim.
For example, on April 25, 1995, six days after the destruction of the Murrah federal building, the Dallas Morning News ran this story under the headline, “Fax referring to bombing sent by ex-GOP Texas official, party aide says” —

Mr. Stockman on Sunday denied reports that his office passed the fax to the National Rifle Association and failed to give it to the FBI. Yesterday he released a letter to the FBI confirming his version of events.
Mr. Stockman also said that a staff member had given the fax to the NRA without his permission. He said he was considering whether to discipline the aide.
Telephone toll records indicate that the fax was sent about 50 minutes after the bombing, a federal official said.

According to the Morning News, a hand-written message on the fax read, “First update. Bldg 7 to 10 floors only. Military people on scene — BATF/FBI. Bomb threat received last week. Perpetrator unknown at this time. Oklahoma.” The machine that sent the fax to Stockman stamped “Wolverine” at the top of the page, the Morning News reported.
That Stockman received the fax after the bombing was also reported in a June 22, 1995 column in the Houston Press by Jim Simmon, titled “God, Guns and Kombucha: Is Steve Stockman a committed crackpot, or just a hapless goofball?”As its headline suggests, this was hardly a puff piece favorable toward Stockman. Nonetheless, Simmon wrote —

Contrary to suggestions in some earlier reports, Stockman’s office had received the fax after the bombing and promptly passed it on to the FBI. (Ironically, the initial misunderstanding about the fax was propagated by the National Rifle Association, Stockman’s chief patron.)

I’ll venture a guess that self-proclaimed geek Maddow not only has access to computers, but that those computers are connected to the Internet — leading to all sorts of wondrous possible discoveries (and, alas, inconvenient facts), assuming a person is inclined to look.

This is nothing more than straight up lying on the air; she should be fired, and if MSNBC has an ounce of integrity; they would terminate her employment. However, because I know that network well, I know that nothing will happen.

What really pisses me off about this whole thing, is this:

Maddow’s mention of late congresswoman Helen Chenoweth-Hage is even more gratuitous than her attempt at character assassination of Stockman. Chenoweth and Stockman “were so close to the militia movement,” Maddow says, that he, Stockman, but not she, Chenoweth, received “advance notice” of the bombing. Chenoweth-Hage, killed in a 2006 car accident, is no longer able to defend herself. Maddow didn’t give Stockman the chance.

Slandering dead people, that is the Democratic Party of today. 🙄  Which is why I will never vote for that party; ever again. Sarcastic smile

I ask you people, why the hell do we have to give the god damned Muslims in this Country some sort of god damned special treatment!?!?!?! Now the argument here is, that if you do not use the term “Radical Muslims”, that you imply that ALL Muslims are terrorists; to which I say, ever read their Koran? I am just saying….

Again, let me say, I agree with both of these people 100 percent; it was Muslims that attacked us on 9/11, it was not Christians, it was not Jews, it was not Hindus; it was Muslims. To say anything other than this, excuses the group that attacked us. What about so-called peace loving Muslims? Well, to that I say this, when the Muslim Community decides to confront, head on, the radical element within their own religion abroad and here in America —- then I might start making that distinction, until that starts happening, all bets are off.

Further more, let me get into something else here. This whole idea, by some, on the liberal left, that Bush did 9/11. Now to normal sane Americans; this idea that President George W. Bush caused or ordered the attacks on 9/11 is pure insanity. But to some of the left, it is a true fact. Honestly, only about 1% actually believe that Bush caused 9/11. The rest of the left, use that little line, out of anger — over losing the 2000 and 2004 elections. I ought to know, I used to vote Democrat, up until 2007, when I decided that the Democratic Party had went too far to the left for even my liking.

This whole idea that Bush caused 9/11 and Democrats calling for a formal investigation into events surrounding 9/11, and also the lead up to the Iraq War is nothing more than political retribution towards the Republican Party and towards George W. Bush —- because the Democrats lost 2000 and 2004. As you all know, in 2000, the Democrats ran an unelectable buffoon named Al Gore. In 2004, Same deal, different person. Losing both of those elections have burned Democrats for years. Hence the continued inferring that Bush caused 9/11. Plus, on top of that, there was the Iraq War; which was the liberal “cause” here, up until someone within the liberal establishment decided that the Iraq War was no longer worth making the entire liberal movement look stupid and they dropped it as a whole. Then there is the afghan war; which the opposition to it, has been rather muted. Because the liberal establishment knows that if they turn on that War that the Democratic Party to the rest of America, will look like the biggest bunch of hypocrites ever. Which they are, but I digress. Either way, these videos just show you; one, the hypocrisy of the liberals and two, how bad that the liberal movement has become, when it comes to freedom of speech.

Come November 2, I will either be voting for Libertarians or Republicans. I have no really decided which; at this point, I am most likely pulling the lever for the Republicans. Because we need to right the ship and the libertarians have never won anything at all, and I want to vote for a winner this time; especially here in Michigan. We have had enough of Democratic failure, me especially, being out of work since 2005, it does really suck. Instead of doing the normal blaming of the Republicans, like some people I know around here do, I am facing reality and saying that Granholm and her polices failed and am voting different.

Reason Magazine profiles Detroit, Here is what they missed

It seems that Reason Magazine has decided that it is Detroit’s time in the barrel.  They have produced a video detailing another rightfully named “Boondoggle” of a light rail system.  It appears that the funding for this project is coming from the United States Government and by proxy — yours and mine pocketbooks and Taxes.

I noticed in the video of theirs, that they used an old promo video, made in 1965 by the city of Detroit.  For what it is worth; that video was made for the luring of the International Olympic Committee to Detroit; of which I am very to report that the committee saw right through that silly propaganda film and passed on Detroit.  Which proves to this writer that the people at the Olympic committee are much smarter than the then Mayor of Detroit, gave them credit for being.  I mean, could you have seen the Olympics being held in Detroit?  The metals themselves would have never made it out alive.  I could just see it now, “Your Medal, or your life cracka!”  It is quite the horrifying thought actually.

Now for what they missed; in 1967 there was a horrific riot here in Detroit.  It has been called the 1967 Detroit race riot.  The riot itself was started after the City of Detroit’s Police Department raided an after-hours blind pig.  Now, keep in mind, the police were simply doing their jobs.  They were tipped off to an illegal drinking establishment, which, for what it is worth —- only catered to black people; and they raided the place.  During the raid, a scuffle broke out, between the police and the persons being raided, somehow during that scuffle; a police officer’s guns went off and thus gave catalyst to one of worst riots in the history of the Country —- not mention the city of Detroit —– a rumor.  The rumor was that a black man that was arrested during raid of the blind pig was laying face down on the sidewalk, with his hands cuffed behind his back; was shot at point blank range in the back of the head, by a uniformed Detroit Police officer.

Now there is only one little inconvenient truth to this sickening and most awful rumor —- not a word of it was even remotely true. — It was this rumor, which was circulated among the Detroit black population, in a rather short amount of time; that was the proverbial kerosene on the bonfire for the City of Detroit in 1967 and as a result; all hell broke loose in Detroit.  This was the result:

If I sat here and said that all of the above was done by blacks — I would be straight up lying to you.  It has been widely reported around here, and there were outside forces that egged on, supported, and even contributed to the huge riot.  Anarchists from various states were believed to have come to Detroit and joined in the riot —- we call those people libertarian leftists today.  Although, I like to call these people something different —- Anti-American.

Here is a groovy little video that shows just went on here in Detroit in 1967 —- with music from Detroit’s own MC5:

The riot stopped after the then Mayor of Detroit, Jerome Cavanagh, a Democrat, stopped cowering behind his desk, at the prospect of so many out of control blacks; and actually called the Governor of Michigan, George W. Romney, a Republican and begged for the National Guard to be brought in to stop the rioting.  Which is so typical of the liberal Democrats, they make a mess of things and then call in the adults to clean up the mess, which is what we have in Washington DC right now!  Anyone who would doubt my words, I will personally give you the “real world” tour of Detroit and show you just how bad the children Democrats have ruined that city.  I ought to know, I did live there at one time, like many other people from this area.

It is fair to note, however, that the riot in Detroit was not the first one.  There were actually three —- 1863, 1943, and 1967 respectively.  They all had the same things in common; blacks who were under the impression that they were being oppressed somehow or another —- or as it is commonly known in proper English as being a selfish ingrate.  I mean, we allowed them to migrate to Detroit from places like Alabama, where they were getting lynched on a regular basis, gave them jobs based on their skill levels; which were, honestly, not that very high — but yet, they were being oppressed by the white man.  The blacks at time said that they wanted social justice, which means, in normal human speak, “I want what you have, but I do not want to have to actually earn it or work for it, I want it given to me.”  This is pretty much the hallmark of the Democratic Party, is it not?

It happened around this time in 1967.  Many of the white immigrants, who fled Germany and the surrounding countries, after the horrific collapse of the Weimar Republic began to really think that this whole idea of blacks and whites living in Detroit in sweet and loving harmony —- was nothing more than a pipe dream and began to flee the city Detroit.  I kid you not; entire Churches, Synagogues, and Families — everything beat a path out of Detroit like cockroaches scattering in sudden daylight. Now, the Democrats have long said this was because these people were racist.  However, let me ask you a question.  If an angry black man came tearing up your street and wanted to toss a Molotov cocktail through the front window of your house or through the window of your store, for no reason other than a silly rumor — would you not have second thoughts about wanting to keep your store or possibly even your family in that city?  I think the answer to that question is obvious.

In closing, while the Reason Magazine video was great, it missed one important piece of the puzzle.  Detroit did not just end up in its current condition for no reason; it had help and it was not an overnight thing, it has been happening for years.  In addition, there is not one thing to blame, but a plethora of things to blame; politics, corruption, riots, unions — all of it have contributed to Detroit’s demise.  Not to mention race, it is a factor; but to scapegoat one race for the demise is wrong-headed.  This is why the Neo-Nazi Klan hates me so much, because I disagree with and mock their folly with great joy.  In other words, not just blacks destroyed Detroit.  It was all of races, taking what they could get for themselves and then fleeing to their perspective corners of the state and allowing the inner city to rot.  All the while painting over the rot and justifying it as some sort of community project.  As they say, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.  You can put socialist programs into a city that is beyond saving; but the city, along with its rot and failures are still there.  You would think that after some 43 years after those race riots; Detroit’s leadership and Michigan’s leadership would have figured that out by now.

Dr. Ron Paul’s Speech to the Virginia Tea Party

Just a couple bones of contention with the above:

  • Paul’s assertion that unborn life should be protected by the Federal Government is absurd. I do not believe that the Federal Government has the right or the obligation to protect much of anything at all; except those things outlined in the United States Constitution — nothing more, nothing less. What Dr. Paul is doing here is repeating the nonsense of the Christian Right. Which is, as far as this writer is concerned, pure rubbish. If people believe the practice of Abortion is such a horrific thing, let them rise up and organize, and challenge the STATES to outlaw the practice of abortion.  Keep the Federal Government out of the business of the people’s bodies.
  • Paul’s idea that we should eliminate all Government programs like Social Security, is unrealistic; and it would hurt people — like my parents, who paid into the program for years. Does Ron Paul want to harm my parents? I would hope not.
  • Paul’s idea of trust and friendship with all Countries is naive at best. The inconvenient truth is that there are Countries and Regimes out there that want nothing more, than for the United States of America to be utterly and totally destroyed.  Even China is now worrying the Military leaders, as there seems to be those within the Chinese Military who see the United States as an enemy. This should worry many Americans, as we do borrow large amounts of money from this Country. Let us also not forget what happened to John Birch in that Country as well. There is also the terrorism argument as well; but I am fully aware that much of that, is due to our foreign policy decisions of the past. However, for us to foolishly assume that if we tell Islamic terrorists that we do not wish to harm them, that they will not attack us again, would be an exercise in extreme stupidity.
  • As a Paleo-Conservative type; I disagree with Ron Paul’s idea of unfettered Capitalism, AKA Globalism. I believe that globalism has hurt this Country, namely the economy here in the Detroit, Michigan area. TAFTA, NAFTA and all the rest of these idiotic free trade agreements should be repealed and heavy tariffs should be imposed on anyone that wishes to manufacture product outside of the United States of America and import it into this Country.

All of the rest, I pretty much agree with, especially when it comes to fiscal policy and the federal reserve.

A few words about Vice President Dick Cheney

I will be the first to admit it; I did not agree with the Bush Administration’s decision to go to war in Iraq.  Furthermore, I did not vote for this man or his boss either time.  However, because I am a decent human being, because I am a Christian and possibly, because I am just an old damned softhearted fool —- my heart sunk, when I saw this photo published in the New York Daily News:

Richard Bruce “Dick” Cheney, who was born in 1941, is a controversial figure, no matter how you slice it.  Whether liberals want to admit it or not, Dick Cheney made some decisions that most likely pulled our butts out of the fire on 9/11. The hours after the attack on 9/11, Dick Cheney, along with George W. Bush, were there, leading this Country after 9/11.  For that, this man has my respect.  I mean, could you honestly see Barack Obama in the same position?  It sends chills up my spine, just thinking about that.

One of my biggest issues, as evidenced by the ignorant comments over that the New York Daily News site, is that the far left in this Country could never, or would never, make a distinction between the policy and the person making the policy.  I readily admit to being one of those idiots who did the very same thing.  As much as I disagreed with the policies of George W. Bush, and yes, Dick Cheney — I would never wish of them either harm or even poor health.

Reading those comments over at the New York Daily News site, which I would never print here, not for a million dollars in cash; further reinforces my belief that America is in a state of horrific decline —  A decline of social, Spiritual, and personal aspects. Example: Could you honestly see anyone publicly making those awful comments about a former Vice President in the 50’s — or even 60’s? I could not. Again, it points to an awful decline in our society and to a lack of Spiritual involvement in the lives of the people, as America had back in the 1940’s.  It is something missing badly in this Country; and it will eventually cause this destruction of this Country — A destruction that is foretold in the Holy Scriptures of old.

In conclusion, let me simply say this: Dick Cheney:  I wish you good health and great comfort sir, in your final years.  I thank you for your service to your Country and I wish you good favor with the creator of all humankind.

Holy Cow!: Democratic Party Representative John Dingell at 39% in polling

As a rule, I do not get too excited about polls — but this one here, is a stunner!

From my hometown paper — The Detroit Free Press: (which by the way leans more Liberal —- Unlike the Detroit News; which is more libertarian leaning. )

A new independent poll has the dean of the U.S. House, Rep. John Dingell, trailing his Republican opponent, Rob Steele, by 4 percentage points.

The automated phone survey of 300 people in the 15th Congressional District showed Steele getting 43.8% of the vote. Dingell, a Dearborn Democrat and the longest-serving member of Congress, got 39.5%. About 11% were undecided. The gap is within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points. The poll was conducted Monday.

Dingell’s campaign said the survey — conducted by the Rossman Group of Lansing and Team TelCom — is a Republican front and is contradicted by other polls in recent weeks.

Team TelCom’s president Gary Reed has Republican ties, but Kelly Rossman-McKinney, CEO of the Rossman Group, has Democratic roots.

“It’s kind of what we hear on the ground. We’re hearing from everybody about the need for change and the need for someone who is not a career politician,” Steele said.

Ed Morrissey interjects:

Having Steele ahead is certainly newsworthy, but the bigger takeaway here is just how badly Dingell polls in this race after almost 56 years in Washington.

Why?  In part, Michigan’s economic woes play into the national anti-incumbent mood.  The state has followed the same kind of economic plan that Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama have tried to implement on a national scale, and they’ve been doing it longer.  Michigan voters can see the end game even more clearly than voters nationwide, and it’s no surprise that Michigan might clean House in three weeks.  Part of it, though, is Dingell himself, who has a habit of saying foolish things, and saying them on national TV.

Not only this; the bigger point is that not all of Michigan is liberal blue. I can tell you of areas that are, in fact, very Conservative and they’re not the rich, upper middle class areas either. There are some middle, working class area that have been in the Republican camp for years. Generally the further south, north, east and west of Detroit you go. The more Conservative politically it gets. Detroit proper is solidly liberal; but the suburbs is a mixed bag.

The bigger point is this; and it was articulated by Mr. Morrissey very well; people here in Michigan are just fed up. The Democrats have held the keys here forever and day. The Democrats have, along with the inaction of Republicans who were in power back when the signs that the housing market was going to crash — basically screwed this area into the ground. Michigan’s housing market is, bluntly —- terrible. This was caused by the Democrat’s stupid idea of social engineering of the housing market. The Carter Administration started it and Clinton Administration continued it. This is not even to mention the globalist NAFTA and TAFTA agreements that were signed into law by the Clinton Administrations; which in effect hobbled the Automotive industry here in Detroit. Why do you think that the UAW here in Detroit did not make a endorsement of the Democratic Candidates, until after the primary was finally over? Because the UAW’s memory is long and they remember how Clinton sold them up the river.

Plus, too, Jennifer Granholm’s performance here as Governor of Michigan has been described as horrific at best. Her policies and style of Governorship in this state has been just awful. Even my Father, who is a committed Democratic Party voter, cannot stand the woman. It has not been uncommon to hear the phrase, “Send that bitch back to Canada, where she belongs!” to be said in the context of a conversation about her. That is kind of nasty; but that is the feeling about her around here. This might be the reason why when her Lt. Governor John D. Cherry did a test poll to see how he would fare in a election, the result was a resounding, “HELL NO!” and he scrapped his plans to run for Governor.

If Dingell isn’t safe in Detroit, is any Democrat safe anywhere?

Now because I am a realist. I believe there are some safe Democratic Districts  Hansen Clarke will get Michigan’s 13th congressional district. I just do not see a Republican winning that. Unless a miracle happens.

Either way, this is going to be a very interesting election cycle. It is 25 days away from election day. I cannot wait to vote. 😀

Gallup Poll: Unemployment back over 10%

The only reason I am posting this today, is being I got a call from a poll taker; he was getting poll data for the coming election….. and boy did he ever get an ear full about the Democrats.

PRINCETON, NJ — Unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, increased to 10.1% in September — up sharply from 9.3% in August and 8.9% in July. Much of this increase came during the second half of the month — the unemployment rate was 9.4% in mid-September — and therefore is unlikely to be picked up in the government’s unemployment report on Friday.

Certain groups continue to fare worse than the national average. For example, 15.8% of Americans aged 18 to 29 and 13.9% of those with no college education were unemployed in September.

The increase in the unemployment rate component of Gallup’s underemployment measure is partially offset by fewer part-time workers, 8.7%, now wanting full-time work, down from 9.3% in August and 9.5% at the end of July.

As a result, underemployment shows a more modest increase to 18.8% in September from 18.6% in August, though it is up from 18.4% in July. Underemployment peaked at 20.4% in April and has yet to fall below 18.3% this year.

The government’s final unemployment report before the midterm elections is based on job market conditions around mid-September. Gallup’s modeling of the unemployment rate is consistent with Tuesday’s ADP report of a decline of 39,000 private-sector jobs, and indicates that the government’s national unemployment rate in September will be in the 9.6% to 9.8% range. This is based on Gallup’s mid-September measurements and the continuing decline Gallup is seeing in the U.S. workforce during 2010.

However, Gallup’s monitoring of job market conditions suggests that there was a sharp increase in the unemployment rate during the last couple of weeks of September. It could be that the anticipated slowdown of the overall economy has potential employers even more cautious about hiring. Some of the increase could also be seasonal or temporary.

Further, Gallup’s underemployment measure suggests that the percentage of workers employed part time but looking for full-time work is declining as the unemployment rate increases. To some degree, this may reflect a reduced company demand for new part-time employees. For example, employers may be converting some existing part-time workers to full time when they are needed as replacements, but may not in turn be hiring replacement part-time workers. Another explanation may relate to the shrinkage of the workforce, as some employees who have taken part-time work in hopes of getting full-time jobs get discouraged and drop out of the workforce completely — going back to school to enhance their education, for example, instead of doing part-time work. It is even possible that some workers may find unemployment insurance a better alternative than part-time work with little prospect of going full time.

Regardless, the sharp increase in the unemployment rate during late September does not bode well for the economy during the fourth quarter, or for holiday sales. In this regard, it is essential that the Federal Reserve and other policymakers not be misled by Friday’s jobs numbers. The jobs picture could be deteriorating more rapidly than the government’s job release suggests.

But, as we know the Democrats are not interested in helping the white middle class. They’re more interested in insulting Americans, because they feel that they’re too stupid to know what they want. It is not just the politicians either, it is their bloggers too. See Here, Here and Here. See why I will never vote Democrat again, ever?

While we real Americans are out of work and waiting for the Government to get out of the way; so that actual jobs can be created in this Country. The liberal elite are taking to the airwaves and to the blogs to insult the American people and those of us that disagree with the socialism of Barack Obama, as stupid, racist, and America-haters.

Remember this come November 2, 2010 and vote accordingly. We need change; but not the sort of change that the Democrats are wanting to push on us; further more, we should not allow these monsters to insult us. We should speak back —- at the ballot box!

Michigan’s unemployment rate is higher than the National

Detroit’s unemployment rate, last I heard was at 30%.

The Feckless Right: Exhibit M for Morbid

An interesting event happened last night. I happened to see one of the sickest morbid things ever written on twitter by a so-called Conservative blogger.

It was written by Robert Stacy McCain —- Yeah, that Robert Stacy McCain. The same guy who threw me under the bus to satisfy and pacify a Michelle Malkin fan boy. The one who has quite the checkered past and is now the Neo-Conservative darling; despite his checkered past.

Last night Mr. Neo-Nazi McCain took to twitter and said this:

…and after I tried to be a little charitable after his idiotic Neo-Nazi assistant basically blew his blog up or it was hacked by someone that McCain pissed off!

So, anyhow, I saw that, and I must confess, I lost it. Here is why; I live here in Michigan, Kent State is Ohio. In case anyone does not know what McCain was referring to; he was mocking and making light of the Kent State shootings that took place at Kent State in Ohio on May 4, 1970.  This is the awful tragedy that produced one of the most iconic photos in history; this one:

But yet, Robert Stacy McCain thinks that this is funny and that this sort of barbaric action should happen to anyone who disagrees with his form of Conservatism. Which, in all honesty, is about as Conservative, as I am Communist.

I want to be know of public record; that I meant every god-damned word of that too. Anyone morbid person that would take to twitter, a blog or any other sort of writing medium and write something as asinine as this; ought to suffer the same fate as those innocent students who were merciless murdered in 1970. In Robert Stacy McCain’s case, the sooner the damned better. Normally, I would never advocate that sort of extremism; but this idiotic comment was just more than I could take. Nothing says, “Out of Touch, DC Beltway elitist asshole” better than some former Neo-Nazi turned Neo-Conservative darling writing something as idiotic and moronic as this.

Ladies and Gentlemen, if this is what the new post-Bush Conservative/Republican movement is all about, I want nothing to do with it and you will find in the sanity region of libertarianism and Paleo-Conservatism. I might not agree with the Socialist, Communist, Democratic Party far left; but I will be damned, if I will ever advocate for the deaths of those that I disagree with!

I feel like Senator Barry Goldwater Sr. and the man who owned the farm at Woodstock — Mr. Max Yasgur, who was, in fact, a libertarian Conservative; I might not agree with those who protested this past weekend, but I will advocate to my dying breath for their right to protest and for their right to hold to and believe whatever political, religious or person beliefs that they might wish to hold. That is the beauty of this fine Country will call America; we can disagree on politics and actually have an opinion of our own without worry that someone might actually want to kill us. Like in North Korea, Iran and in other nations that do not enjoy the freedoms of ours.

It is too bad that people like that Neo-Nazi scum, Robert Stacy McCain does not hold to much beliefs, but instead wishes to see those who whom he disagrees with brutally murdered. My friends, that is not true Conservatism, nor is that a true American spirit. That is the spirit of a Nazi fascist thug. Something that Robert Stacy McCain knows all about!

Like I wrote previously to Rick Moran; I can relate — Boy can I ever. 😡 and as Rick said, this being the fool business is a very lonely venture. However, if standing on the Island of common sense and decency; and yes, dare I say it —- Sanity?!?! is what I must do.  Then here I shall stand, until THEY, not ME come back to their senses!

Which was, for those who are too damned lazy to click a link —- that Rick Sanchez was on the way out anyway, and knew it and thought he would take a nice shot at Stewart to ensure his departure. Here is the really funny part, the right’s useful idiot Atheist; no, not AllahPundit — wants Sanchez brought back and in the process of the article takes a rather gratuitous swipe at Israel. Good Job Hitchens, nothing like pissing off your readers before assuming room temperature. 🙄

I can relate Rick, I really can

Congrats to Rick Moran for six years of Blogging:

The parade is passing me by and I have fallen out of step with most of my conservative friends. When I write now, I write for my own amusement or to clarify my own thoughts about a particular issue – something that I have tried to do for the last six years. It’s amazing how shallow one’s thinking truly is unless you force yourself to justify yourself to yourself in writing. “Reading maketh a full man, conference, a ready man, and writing, an exact man” said Francis Bacon. I have tried, within the limits of my own feeble intelligence and failing will, to live up to those words, thus attempting to fulfill what philosophers refer to as “An Examined Life.”

Oddly, while my examination of the underpinnings of my conservative beliefs has led me away from what I suppose is the “mainstream” of what passes for conservative thought these days, the primary goal I set when I began blogging – becoming a commercial success as a writer – has been achieved beyond my imaginings. Ironically, far fewer conservatives read and agree with what I have to say these days then when I was making no money at all. There’s a cosmic lesson to found there – I just haven’t been able to determine what it is yet. Perhaps it’s that the gods have a cruel sense of humor and, like the elf Puck says in Midsummer’s Night Dream, they spend much of their time in rollicking laughter at “…what fools these mortals be.”

It’s lonely being a fool. As I have struggled to find a way to reconcile a robust, philosophically coherent, and consistent conservatism that has meaning for America in the 21st century with the riot of conceits, resentments, paranoia, and narrow mindedness that much of the right has become, I have found myself standing on the curb watching the clowns, the garish floats, the brass bands all roll by, marching toward the precipice and willingly – joyously – jumping over the cliff, trying to take the whole damn country with them.

“To what end?” I wail. “RINO!” they scream at me incoherently as they disappear into the maw of history. At a time when the tenets of conservatism, if applied intelligently and consistently to governance, can help revitalize the United States and this wonderful experiment in self government and individual liberty, the right chooses to eschew governance altogether in favor of a putrid ideological war “to save America.” Just how they intend doing so by trying to implement an agenda that’s 30 years old while immolating lawmakers who dare suggest that working with the opposition to come up with solutions to address our massive problems is necessary, I don’t see. I don’t believe they’ve gotten that far in their thinking yet.

The Story:

OBION COUNTY, Tenn. – Imagine your home catches fire but the local fire department won’t respond, then watches it burn. That’s exactly what happened to a local family tonight.

A local neighborhood is furious after firefighters watched as an Obion County, Tennessee, home burned to the ground.

The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late.  They wouldn’t do anything to stop his house from burning.

Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton.  But the Cranicks did not pay.

The mayor said if homeowners don’t pay, they’re out of luck.

This fire went on for hours because garden hoses just wouldn’t put it out. It wasn’t until that fire spread to a neighbor’s property, that anyone would respond.

Turns out, the neighbor had paid the fee.

“I thought they’d come out and put it out, even if you hadn’t paid your $75, but I was wrong,” said Gene Cranick.

That bolded paragraph is what really gets to me. I have no problem with this kind of opt-in government in principle — especially in rural areas where individual need for government services and available infrastructure vary so widely. But forget the politics: what moral theory allows these firefighters (admittedly acting under orders) to watch this house burn to the ground when 1) they have already responded to the scene; 2) they have the means to stop it ready at hand; 3) they have a reasonable expectation to be compensated for their trouble?

The counterargument is, of course, that this kind of system only works if there are consequences for opting out. For the firefighters to have put out the blaze would have opened up a big moral hazard and generated a bunch of future free-riding — a lot like how the ban on denying coverage based on preexisting conditions, paired with penalties under the individual mandate that are lower than the going premiums, would lead to folks waiting until they got sick to buy insurance.

But that analogy is not quite apt. Mr. Cranick, who has learned an incredibly expensive lesson about risk, wasn’t offering to pay the $75 fee. He was offering to pay whatever it cost to put out the fire. If an uninsured man confronted with the pressing need for a heart transplant offered to pay a year in back-premiums to an insurer to cover the operation, you’d be right to laugh at him. But imagine if that man broke out his check book to pay for the whole shebang, and hospital administrators denied him the procedure to teach him a lesson.

I’m a conservative with fairly libertarian leanings, but this is a kind of government for which I would not sign up.

I have agree with all of the above.  Conservatives believe in LIMITED Government, not no Government at all. This whole idea of “pay for protection” nonsense strikes me as some sort of mafia scheme.  Not only that, there is the moral argument of allowing a man’s house burn to the ground. This is why I am not a 100% libertarian, because libertarians; especially libertarian leftists — put principle before morality — and that my friends is wrong.   If were living in the town of Obion County, Tennessee; I would be demanding that the town abolish the stupid “pay to spray” rule and put in a more sensible way of paying for the city’s fire service, like maybe out of the city’s general fund; which is most likely being used to pay this idiotic mayor.

Again, no matter how you slice this one; it just looks horrible for the libertarian purists.
