Why do Christians do stupid stuff like this?

Ugh:

Harold Camping lets out a hearty chuckle when he considers the people who believe the world will end in 2012.

“That date has not one stitch of biblical authority,” Camping says from the Oakland office where he runs Family Radio, an evangelical station that reaches listeners around the world. “It’s like a fairy tale.”

The real date for the end of times, he says, is in 2011.

The Mayans and the recent Hollywood movie “2012” have put the apocalypse in the popular mind this year, but Camping has been at this business for a long time. And while Armageddon is pop science or big-screen entertainment to many, Camping has followers from the Bay Area to China.

Camping, 88, has scrutinized the Bible for almost 70 years and says he has developed a mathematical system to interpret prophecies hidden within the Good Book. One night a few years ago, Camping, a civil engineer by trade, crunched the numbers and was stunned at what he’d found: The world will end May 21, 2011.

via Biblical scholar’s date for rapture: May 21, 2011.

Oh, Good grief, do I have to quote the Bible on here, all of the time?!??! 🙄 :

And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other . Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass , till all these things be fulfilled . Heaven and earth shall pass away , but my words shall not pass away . But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be . For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking , marrying and giving in marriage , until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came , and took them all away ; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be . Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken , and the other left . Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken , and the other left. —- Matthew 24:31-41 (KJV)

and….

And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass , know that it is nigh, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass , till all these things be done . Heaven and earth shall pass away : but my words shall not pass away . But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. Take ye heed , watch and pray : for ye know not when the time is . For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch . Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh , at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping . And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch. —- Mark 13:27-37 (KJV)

There is no dispute that we are in the end times; but to say that we can even know the season of his rapture and the end times is false. In fact, Christ said this:

And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. – Acts 1:7 (KJV)

So, as always, this guy and many like him; are full of bunk. 🙄

  1. nah Revelation was about Rome 2012 the mayans have to make a new calendar. Thats it folks. Bye.

  2. Instead of seeking out verses for convenience, Camping seeks to understand the entire Bible on any given doctrine. With respect to eschatology… try reading this one carefully as well:

Ecc 8:5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man’s heart discerneth both time and judgment.

We should fear God’s word, not read it to find convenient verses.

    1. That’s pretty funny considering that he is attempting to do something, that the Bible says that he cannot. Sorry, I don’t buy that one at all.

    1. I hear ya, I tend to avoid the topic, because, quite frankly, here as of late; I’ve sucked a representative of the “Faith”. Having a Pastor stab you in the back, will do that to a guy. 🙄

        1. I need correction myself from time to time. I am still trying to get exposing evil and not judging right.

I hear ya man. Same here. 😐 But I should point out, that exposing false doctrine is NOT being judgmental….and what that guy is preaching, is false doctrine.

  3. Here we go again.

First, they all cite Our Lord’s comment that “..no man knoweth the day and the hour….save the Father only.” And then they proceed to tell you when it’s going to happen.

I’ve had several very interesting discussions about this with my Pastor and others. While I am perfectly ready to believe in the “Rapture of The Church”, we won’t know it’s coming until it happens.

I’m a Religious Conservative, as well as a Political one. Most folks who want the End Times to be happening Right Now (I omit the middle word in there for obvious reasons! Think Henry Bowman.) are doing so because they are looking for an excuse to not be doing what they should be doing here “Under The Sun” for Our Lord.

I have the same comment about them that I do about Global Warming, which I stole from Glenn Reynolds. “I’ll believe it’s a crisis when the people who are telling me that it is one act accordingly.”

I’ve seen very few of those folks selling out their 401k plans and donating them to the poor.

“To everything there is a season….” And it’s His season, not mine. If I’m still plugging along when the Trumpet sounds, I’ll meet him in the air. If not? I didn’t quit doing what I do because I was pushing my obligations off onto someone else, or even Someone else.

I think we’re told to live every day as if He could come back tomorrow, now aren’t we?

    😉
