3 Replies to “Republic vs Democracy”

  1. This childish and inaccurate video fails to point out that a Republican form of government is by definition a representative form of government, which is therefore by definition an Oligarchy.

The producers of this video are either very uneducated or they are simply trying to confuse the public as to how governments are defined and how they function. The video characterizes Democracy as a mindless mob rule that will take your home, your business and even your children away from you, whereas they refer to a Republican form of government as “Rule of Law.” If anyone bothers to look at the government of Switzerland, which is one of the oldest and most respected countries in the world, it operate as a true Democracy it also has a Constitution and operates under a “Rule of Law.”

What the video fails to mention many of the most serious economic, energy, environmental and foreign policy and government corruption problems are related to the fact that the U.S. operates not as a Democracy but with a Republican form of government that allows a tiny number of individuals (typically committee chairman) to conduct business in secret, which makes them especially to bribe. In a real Democracy, the majority of the citizens would determine which legislation would be voted on, and which legislation would become law. Thus, the lobbyists would have no one to bribe. In a Democracy, all court decisions, especially Supreme Court decisions, would also have to be approved by a majority of citizens.

Presidents come and go, and they are known for making campaign promises that they never keep once they get elected. Over 70% of American have stated that they want universal healthcare, yet their elected “Republican” representatives (including the so-called Democrats who are really Republicans) say no way because they represent the interests of drug company lobbyists and other weathly interests and not the majority of the American people who cannot afford to bribe them.

  2. Yes, you are somewhat correct in stating that Switzerland operates “as a true Democracy”. The Swiss Constitution, Article 51 (1) requires all Cantons to have a democratic constitution and under Article 51 (2) need the guarantee of the Swiss Federation to be valid. What I found remarkable about the Constitution of Switzerland were all the guarantees given to the citizens by the Federation. It lists an amazing number of rights, all guaranteed by the Federation.

The Founding Fathers of the United States experimented with a system that began with the philosophy that all rights came from God; therefore the government could not provide any rights to the people.

I have always viewed the founding fathers as remarkably intelligent men, divinely inspired, and possessing knowledge of history severely lacking in our leaders today. They were quoted as saying that democracy was nothing more than “mob-rule”. They were also quoted as saying that democracies eventually destroy themselves when the majority realizes that they can secure monetary gain from the public purse through the power of the vote. Would you characterize America’s Founding Fathers as “uneducated” or “seeking to confuse the public as to how governments are defined and how they function”?

As for the Rule of Law, I ask that all who advocate for a “true democracy”, or any other form of government to define that term for me. All nations operate under the “rule of law” if you define it as the laws passed by the recognized governmental bodies. Under this definition nearly every nation operates by the rule of law, including Iran, Cuba, Burma, Saudi Arabia, et al. In fact, North and South Korea both operate under this definition of the rule of law.

My definition of the “Rule of Law” is a government restricted by enumerated powers given to it by the States and the people of those states. The form of government provided to the United States by the Constitution created a government that was “ruled by law”. The Constitution and Bill of Rights do not “give” anything to the people or the States. It is the Law under which the federal government is authorized to operate. That’s a huge difference. And the basis for a republican form of government.

I can also agree with you that many of our problems come from a form of government that allows a small number of individuals to conduct business in secret. Don’t confuse the Republican Party with a republican form of government. The Republican Party is no more an advocate of republicanism than the Democratic Party is an advocate of true democracy. Both major political parties in the United States today are advocates of power.

Ignorance, apathy, greed and power have led to the gradual erosion of the Constitution and the Rule of Law. This lack of respect for the Constitution is what has led to the practice of drug companies, banking institutions, insurance companies, contractors, and other lobbyists writing laws that the Congress then passes without taking the time to read.

Anyone that truly cherishes freedom should be intellectually curious enough to research the history of the different forms of government for themselves. Don’t take the word of any single source. Try to disprove a philosophy with which you agree. The system of government bequeathed to the United States by the Founding Fathers – the American experiment – has been badly damaged over the years. It is barely recognizable today. This has occurred due to a combination of apathy and ignorance. But it is not yet dead.

I certainly fear living in a true Democracy because when 51% of the people decide that the other 49% should do all the work while they enjoy all the fruits of their labor they will have the law to back them up. In his pamphlet, The Law, published in 1850, Frederich Bastiat referred to this type of “law” as “perverted law”.

  3. First, Switzerland is a mess and poor choice as an example. Second, you use the word Democracy so haphazardly…….. It’s SIMPLE DEMOCRACY or PURE DEMOCRACY that is referred to in the video. In the end, the success of a Republic works, because of freedom of the press.
